Carolina Drifters – March 2025 Newsletter

Bass Lake RV Campground, Dillon, SC  March 6 – 9

We had a small group join us at Bass Lake this weekend.  They included:  Richard Stanton, Rachel Carnell, Don & Betty Elliott, Rod & Neily Trump, Barbara & Jonathan Simmons and Rene & I.  We missed the rest of our club members who were unable to attend, it really was a nice weekend.

Thursday saw us all arriving and getting settled.  Rene was really itching to get to the lake and try out his new fishing pole and rubber bait.  Around 6 or so, we started a campfire and slowly everyone came over to sit and visit for a while.  It gave our new president, Rene, the opportunity to pass out his welcome bags.  During the week he had put considerable thought to what he was going to put inside them.

He finally arrived at the idea of creating a type of tool kit.  At each campout he would add a few more trinkets to the kit, i.e.:  fuses, toothpicks, electrical tape etc., so that by the end of the year, if you attended all of the campouts, you would have a complete tool kit for your camper!  We really like the idea.

Friday everyone was pretty much on their own until dinner.  Don and his brother in-law Glen went and played golf nearby, while Betty and her sister Debbie visited at the campground, while others explored the nearby towns or just relaxed and enjoyed being outside.  At the pot luck dinner we had a feast complete with shrimp cocktail and chili, deviled eggs, spaghetti and salad and various other dishes I can’t remember them all.  For desert Barbara made brownies that were so good, nice and chewy!  Our president pulled the lucky winning ticket for our 50/50, trust me it was not rigged, but somehow I won! Woohoo!  Not often that it happens, but I’m awfully grateful when it does! 

Saturday Rene was really wanting to try out his new fishing set up.  He caught some real beauties!  Trying to hold them up to take a picture he said was starting to hurt his arm.  Estimated weight around 3-5 pounds!  Last year all he caught were fish called “crappies”.  This time the park is living up to its name, because he is catching Big Mouth Bass! Downside is he cannot keep them, but it looks like he’s really fighting that pole when he catches one!  That smile on his face is genuine 

At two o’clock we all gathered at the grassy patch in front of Barbara & Johnathan’s site for a game of Murbles.  Everyone had their own color so it wasn’t too hard to keep track of three balls.  As the game was being played there were times when players would challenge the winner and Rene would break out his measuring tape to ensure fair play for all.  It’s a really simple game to learn, and once everyone got the knack of it and how to throw their balls, I think everyone really enjoyed playing.  At the end of the game the score was deemed a tie between Barbara Simmons and Rachel Carnell at 6 points each.  We do intend to have a “Murble-Off” to settle this tie breaker.

5:00 found us all starving and heading to the BC Steak & BBQ Buffet restaurant for dinner.  It wasn’t too far from the campground and the food was pretty good.  After dinner and back at the campground we fired the Solo Stove back up for a few hours.  With all the activity during the day, I think everyone was pretty much ready to call it a day and retire early to bed.

The Sunday morning ritual of packing and cleaning is a really sad site to see, especially when we’ve had so much fun the past few days.  Trying to keep a firm chin by looking forward to our next camping adventure… on to Perry!

Our next club campout is scheduled for April 10 – 13.  This is a joint campout with the Palmetto Winnebago Club, at Hideaway RV Resort in Myrtle Beach, SC.  Phone is 843-444-2119, if you need to reach them, be sure to tell them you are with the Carolina Drifters.  Safe travels everyone!
